Phelan O’Hara presents ‘Towards Childhood’ in Berlin

Galerie Michael Haas has brought together Phelan O’Hara’s ‘Towards Childhood’ series in an exhibition for the first time.

From 9 to 31 July 2026, Galerie Michael Haas in Berlin presented ‘Towards Childhood’, the first exhibition devoted to this series by Phelan O’Hara. Its point of departure is children’s drawing, a visual language the British artist has explored for more than fifteen years.

O’Hara does not simply copy these drawings onto canvas. He develops original compositions from simplified figures, houses, animals and landscape elements, combining them with personal observations, fairy tales and musical references. The deliberate reduction of perspective, form and colour places the work in dialogue with Art Brut.

The exhibition is especially relevant to Galerie Roche because O’Hara is a central artist in the gallery’s programme. It shows how he continues to develop his characteristic combination of humour, memory and observations of everyday life in recent works.
