Bremen marks 150 years since Paula Modersohn-Becker’s birth

Kunsthalle Bremen is marking Paula Modersohn-Becker’s 150th anniversary with guided tours, puppet theatre and an online academy.

Kunsthalle Bremen is presenting an extensive autumn 2026 programme for the 150th anniversary of Paula Modersohn-Becker’s birth. Public tours examine the artist’s life and work between Worpswede and Paris, while the production ‘Paula. Selbst’ approaches her self-portraits through puppet theatre, music and live drawing.

An online academy complements the programme. Together, these formats combine art-historical interpretation with contemporary approaches and return a pioneer of modernism to the centre of public attention.

The anniversary has particular significance in Bremen: Modersohn-Becker’s distinctive language of form and colour is closely connected to Worpswede and remains a central reference point in German classical modernism.
